day tours in scotland

Day trip opportunities simply abound!

Local delights abound

These are the local highlights:

Schiehallion

The Hill of the Fairies, one of Scotland 's most shapely and famous mountains permanently casts a watchful eye over proceedings at the hotel and its conical shape once allowed physicists to use its gravitational attraction on a pendulum to calculate the mass of the earth. An easy and superb ascent.

Queens View

This magnificent outlook is world famous and can be enjoyed at the eastern end of Loch Tummel, only a few miles from the hotel.

West Highland Line

Arguably one of the most exhilarating railway journeys in the world, passing as it does in quite spectacular and dramatic fashion through glens, round mountains, over moors and round lochside edges. And in the summer enhanced by the Jacobite Steam Train, between Fort William and Mallaig, following the famous 'Road to the Isles', combining the romance of steam with simply beautiful scenery.

Pitlochry

Originally three small hamlets, now combining to become one of Scotland's best loved perennial tourism destination with an incredible array of choices from distilleries, a theatre, castles, a range of Scottish highland events, walks, cycle routes - incredible scenery - some of the best in Scotland, to clan trails and history - and not to mention a delightful 18 hole golf course.

local tours

These places are recommended for their close proximity.

Loch Tay and Killin

A very leisurely and beautifully scenic trip, taking in Schiehallion, Aberfeldy, Killin and the delightful little village of Fortingall (featuring the oldest tree in Scotland), nestling at the foot of the eastern end of Ben Lawers. Try to visit Castle Menzies and the House of Menzies near Aberfeldy too.

Crieff and Strathearn

This tour allows the option of taking in Perth. Go south to Perth then the road to Crieff. Visit the great visitor centre there, lovely shops, also Glenturret Distillery. On the way back take the superb scenic road through the 'Sma Glen' north to Amulree then Aberfeldy. Perhaps visit the Crannog Centre and the World of Whisky then back to Dunalastair via the spectacular and high level Scherhallion road which skirts the famous mountain.

Distillery Tours

A great round day trip is Dalwhinnie(home of one of the six Classic Malts), Edradour ( Scotland 's smallest) and Blair Atholl at Pitlochry, Glenturret ( Scotland 's oldest), at Crieff, then return via Dewars at Aberfeldy ( Scotland 's newest distillery visitor centre) - all have excellent visitor centres and you'll get a free dram in every one!

Castles

Encompass Blair Castle, or even Balmoral on the North Deeside route, Scone Palace and Castle Menzies comfortably in a pleasant and very scenic day trip.

Shopping

House of Bruar (Scotland 's Harrods) and Clan Donnaidhaidh centre, Pitlochry, Perth with its wonderful shops and Caithness Glass centre or Crieff, which has a first class visitor centre, then return home suitably laden!

A day tour by rail

A short drive from Kenmore takes you to Rannoch Station on the West Highland Line from which you can take an exquisite journey through spectacular scenery and vistas, to Oban, Mallaig or Fort William.
